The choice between hi vis jackets versus softshells comes down to the job, the working environment and whether conspicuous visibility is a requirement or simply useful.

For many UK businesses, the answer is not one garment for every person and season. A hi-vis jacket provides a clear safety function where workers must be seen. A softshell provides everyday weather protection, movement and a smarter branded appearance. Buying the right one starts with understanding that difference.

Hi vis jackets versus softshells: the main difference

A hi-vis jacket is primarily safetywear. It uses fluorescent background material and retroreflective tape to help the wearer stand out in daylight, poor light and vehicle headlights. Where a risk assessment or site rule requires high-visibility clothing, the garment should meet the relevant standard, commonly EN ISO 20471. The required class depends on the role and environment.

A softshell is a practical work jacket designed for comfort. It is usually made from a woven stretch outer fabric with a fleece or microfleece inner layer. Most are wind-resistant and water-resistant, rather than fully waterproof. They are popular for trades, delivery teams, facilities staff, outdoor sales teams and employees who need a presentable layer that is easy to work in.

The important point is simple: a standard softshell is not a replacement for certified hi-vis clothing. A bright yellow or orange softshell may improve visibility, but it does not automatically meet a workplace high-visibility requirement. If a site specifies compliant hi-vis garments, check the product certification and the required class before ordering.

When a hi-vis jacket is the right purchase

Choose hi-vis jackets for roles where visibility is part of safe working practice. This includes roadworks, construction sites, logistics yards, airport operations, railway environments, traffic management and any workplace with moving vehicles or low-light exposure.

Hi-vis outerwear is also the sensible choice for staff working outside through winter. Many styles combine fluorescent fabric and reflective tape with warm linings, quilted insulation, waterproof coatings, taped seams or storm flaps. However, high visibility and waterproof performance are separate features. If staff will face sustained rain, check whether the jacket also carries the appropriate waterproof or weather-protection specification rather than assuming every hi-vis jacket will keep water out.

For rail work, garments may need to meet RIS-3279-TOM requirements. This is a specific requirement for the rail industry and should not be treated as interchangeable with general hi-vis certification. Procurement teams should always work from the customer's site specification or their own safety assessment.

Hi-vis jackets can be branded, but print placement needs care. Large logos placed over reflective tape can reduce the effective visible area and may affect compliance. A small logo in an approved clear area, or a rear print where the garment design permits it, is often more practical. Confirm the intended decoration position before production, particularly on certified safetywear.

When a softshell is the better fit

Softshells work well where staff need an outer layer for wind, light showers and changing temperatures without the bulk of a heavy coat. Their flexibility makes them especially useful for engineers, installers, tradespeople, warehouse supervisors and mobile teams who spend part of the day indoors and part outside.

The fabric is usually more breathable and easier to move in than a padded jacket. That matters for jobs involving lifting, climbing ladders, driving or repeated manual tasks. Softshells also tend to look less like PPE and more like a standard uniform jacket, which can suit customer-facing staff, showrooms, service visits and events.

From a branding perspective, softshells are often straightforward. The smoother outer surface can give a clean result for chest logos and rear branding, while embroidery can create a durable, professional finish on suitable fabric weights. The best method depends on the garment construction, logo detail and budget. Fine detail may need embroidery digitising or a print-friendly alternative to remain legible at a practical logo size.

A softshell is not always warm enough on its own. In colder weather, it works best as part of a layered uniform: polo shirt or T-shirt, sweatshirt or fleece, then a softshell on top. This approach gives staff more control over comfort than issuing one thick coat for every condition.

Compare the practical buying points

The right choice is easier when you assess the garment against the actual working day rather than just its price or colour.

Visibility and compliance

If visibility is mandatory, start with compliant hi-vis jackets. Check the garment class, garment condition requirements and whether the proposed branding leaves the reflective areas clear. Softshells are suitable where high visibility is not required, or where a separate hi-vis vest or jacket will be worn over the top when entering controlled areas.

Weather protection

A waterproof hi-vis jacket is generally the better option for teams working for long periods in heavy rain. A softshell is better for dry, windy or changeable conditions, particularly where staff need to avoid overheating. Water-resistant does not mean waterproof, so match the garment to the likely weather exposure.

Warmth and movement

Insulated hi-vis jackets provide warmth but can feel bulky during active work. Softshells offer better mobility and are often more comfortable for all-day wear in mild to cool conditions. For winter, consider issuing a softshell alongside a fleece or sweatshirt, or select a warmer hi-vis style for staff who must remain visible outdoors.

Softshells usually offer the cleanest branded uniform look for offices, trade visits and customer-facing teams. Hi-vis jackets can carry logos effectively, but decoration areas are more limited and compliance must remain the priority. If you need a consistent identity across several job roles, use the same logo, thread colours and print positions across polos, hoodies, softshells and safetywear where suitable.

Cost and replacement planning

Hi-vis garments may need replacing sooner than standard workwear because fluorescent fabric can fade, reflective tape can wear and staining is more obvious. This is not simply a cosmetic issue: worn safetywear may no longer provide the expected level of visibility. Softshells can be a cost-effective everyday uniform layer, while compliant hi-vis jackets are reserved for roles and tasks that genuinely require them.

A practical issue plan for mixed teams

Many organisations get better value by supplying both garments to the right people. For example, a construction firm may issue branded softshells to supervisors and office-based visitors, then certified hi-vis jackets to operatives working near plant and traffic. A delivery business may use softshells for drivers on ordinary rounds and hi-vis outerwear for depot, yard or roadside tasks.

This avoids forcing employees to wear heavy safety jackets where they are unnecessary, while still ensuring suitable PPE is available when the work changes. It also makes uniform ordering easier: choose a core range of branded garments, then add role-specific safetywear in the sizes and quantities required.

Before placing an order, confirm the environment, expected weather, required safety standard, preferred logo position and whether staff need layering options. Size samples or reliable size guidance are worthwhile for jackets, as employees often need room for a hoodie or fleece underneath.

Do not treat colour as compliance

A black softshell with a bright embroidered logo may be ideal for a smart maintenance uniform. A yellow softshell may be useful for general visibility. Neither should be assumed to meet a hi-vis requirement without the appropriate certification.

Equally, a certified hi-vis jacket is not automatically the best garment for every outdoor worker. Comfort affects whether people wear issued uniform properly, and the right softshell can make a significant difference to day-to-day practicality. Specify safetywear where the job demands it, choose softshells where comfort and presentation lead, and build a uniform range that gives staff the correct layer for the work in front of them.
