Do printed logos fade over time?
All decorated garments show some wear eventually. Fabric softens, colours can lose intensity and printed areas are repeatedly flexed, rubbed and laundered. What people describe as fading is not always actual ink fade. A print may look dull because the garment has faded around it. What causes a printed logo to wear out?
The main cause is repeated washing, especially at temperatures above the garment care label. Hot washes, aggressive detergents, bleach and fabric conditioners can all shorten the life of a print. Tumble drying is another common source of damage. High heat can affect transfer adhesives and make some printed finishes feel brittle over time.
Friction also has a major effect. A chest logo beneath a seatbelt, a back print that rubs against vehicle seats, or branding on sleeves that contact work surfaces will wear faster than a logo on a lightly used garment. When correctly cured, it produces a durable finish suitable for many T-shirts, polo shirts, sweatshirts and hoodies. It is often a sensible choice for repeat uniform orders, although set-up requirements can make it less economical for very small quantities or designs with many colours.
Heat-applied transfers are widely used for workwear, names, numbers and multi-colour logos. They are useful where flexibility is needed, where the order contains mixed garment sizes, or where a design has more detail than a simple one-colour print. Their performance relies on the transfer type, correct temperature and pressure, and following the care instructions. Good-quality transfers can be highly durable, but they should not be treated as indestructible under constant high-heat washing and drying.
Direct-to-film and similar full-colour transfer methods can reproduce detailed logos and small colour variations clearly. They are particularly useful for short to mid-sized runs, but the print area should be sized thoughtfully. Applying a large, heavy transfer to a lightweight or stretchy garment can affect comfort and increase stress on the design.
Direct-to-garment printing is normally best suited to suitable cotton-rich garments and detailed artwork. It can provide a soft feel, especially on lighter fabrics, but results vary with garment colour, fabric quality and aftercare. Embroidery is not print, but it is worth considering when durability and a premium uniform finish are priorities. It works particularly well for smaller chest logos on polos, fleeces, jackets and caps. Fine details and small lettering may need simplifying during digitising, and embroidery is not always appropriate for lightweight garments or large back designs. It also offers a different look and feel from a printed logo rather than being a like-for-like substitute.
How to specify branded workwear that lasts
Start with the job, not just the catalogue image. State whether garments are for office staff, trades, hospitality, schools, events or outdoor site teams. Include the likely wash frequency, whether employees use a tumble dryer, and whether the clothing is exposed to oils, chemicals or constant rubbing. This allows the garment weight, fabric and decoration process to be matched to real use.
It is also worth considering logo placement. A left chest print is practical and visible without covering a large area. A rear print improves identification on site or at events but is more exposed to seats, rucksacks and equipment. Hi-vis garments need placement that maintains the visibility and reflective features of the item, rather than covering functional areas.
Ask for artwork to be checked before production. A vector logo is usually the best starting point because it can be scaled cleanly for chest, sleeve and back positions. If only a low-resolution image is available, vector redraw or logo preparation can prevent blurred edges and poor colour definition. Washing advice that protects printed logos
Most premature print damage happens after delivery rather than during production. Employees do not need complicated instructions, but a clear care message with issued uniforms makes a difference.
Wash garments inside out, use the temperature shown on the care label, and avoid bleach or harsh stain removers directly on the print. Turning clothing inside out reduces surface friction against other items in the machine. A mild detergent is generally sufficient for everyday workwear washing.
Avoid ironing directly over a printed logo. If ironing is needed, turn the item inside out or place a protective cloth over the area and use a suitable setting. Air drying is the gentlest option. If a tumble dryer is necessary, use the lowest practical heat setting permitted by the garment label. Do not leave wet garments crumpled in a bag or vehicle for long periods, particularly after dirty site work, as stains and odours become harder to remove without harsher treatment.

When should branded garments be replaced?
Replacement should be based on professional appearance and safety, not just whether the logo is still visible. If a logo is no longer clear enough for staff identification, if the garment colour has become uneven, or if hi-vis performance is affected, replacement is usually the right call.
