What Clothing Suits Outdoor Staff? A Buying Guide

by Admin 26 Sep 2026 0 comments

A grounds team working through a wet morning, a delivery crew loading vehicles in winter or event staff managing an open-air site all face the same issue: what clothing suits outdoor staff when the weather and workload can change during one shift? The right answer is rarely one garment. It is a practical combination of layers, weather protection, visibility and branding that matches the job.

For employers, the aim is to supply clothing people will wear properly. Garments that are too warm, restrictive or poorly sized tend to be left in the van or replaced with non-uniform alternatives. A well-planned outdoor workwear range supports comfort, safer working and a consistent company appearance without buying items that are unsuitable for the role.

What clothing suits outdoor staff in the UK?

Outdoor staff generally need a layered uniform rather than a heavy jacket alone. A polo shirt or T-shirt handles day-to-day comfort, a sweatshirt, fleece or hoodie adds warmth, and a waterproof jacket provides protection when conditions turn. Where staff work near traffic, vehicles or machinery, certified hi-vis clothing may also be required following a site-specific risk assessment.

The exact mix depends on exposure, physical activity and the type of work. A security officer standing at an entrance has different needs from a landscaping operative, engineer or warehouse yard worker. Start with the tasks staff carry out, how long they are outdoors and whether they move between heated indoor areas and open sites.

Weather protection without overheating

Waterproof outerwear is a priority for teams that work outside for long periods. Look for jackets with a practical hood, secure pockets, adjustable cuffs and a length that covers the lower back when bending or lifting. A waterproof layer needs enough room to fit over a fleece or sweatshirt, particularly during colder months.

Breathability matters as much as waterproofing for active roles. Staff carrying equipment, unloading stock or walking large sites can quickly become too warm in a heavy insulated jacket. In these cases, a lighter waterproof shell over separate warm layers is often the more useful issue. It gives staff control over their temperature rather than forcing them to wear one bulky garment all day.

For dry but cold conditions, a fleece is a dependable choice. It is warm, easy to wear and suitable for embroidery on many styles. Softshell jackets can also work well for customer-facing teams because they offer a smarter appearance and light weather resistance, although they are not a replacement for a fully waterproof jacket in persistent rain.

Clothing that allows people to work

Outdoor workwear should not catch, restrict movement or create unnecessary bulk. Trades and maintenance teams commonly need reinforced or hard-wearing trousers, while gardening and site teams benefit from garments that cope with kneeling, lifting and regular washing. A properly fitting polo shirt, sweatshirt or hoodie also makes a noticeable difference during physical work.

Avoid treating one size range as an afterthought. Order a suitable spread of sizes and consider garment cuts where available. Staff are more likely to wear uniform correctly when it fits comfortably across the shoulders, body and sleeves.

Build an outdoor uniform around practical layers

A simple, repeatable clothing system makes ordering easier and gives staff suitable options through the year. For many businesses, the core issue includes a branded polo shirt or T-shirt, a sweatshirt or fleece, and a weatherproof jacket. Add hi-vis garments where the working environment calls for them.

Base layers such as T-shirts and polos should be durable enough for frequent laundering. Polos are a strong option for supervisors, installers, visitor-facing staff and teams that need a neater uniform. T-shirts suit physically demanding or warmer roles and can be cost-effective for larger teams, events and seasonal workers.

Mid-layers provide the warmth staff need through autumn, winter and early spring. Sweatshirts offer a straightforward, hard-wearing option for general work, while fleeces are lighter and easier to remove as temperatures rise. Hoodies are popular with practical teams, but check whether a hood could be a snagging risk or conflict with other PPE before making them standard issue.

Outer layers need to match the site. A padded jacket is suitable for staff who spend long periods stationary in cold weather. A waterproof jacket is better where rain is the primary concern. For mixed conditions, some employers issue both a fleece and a waterproof shell, allowing staff to wear either item alone or together.

When hi-vis workwear is required

Hi-vis clothing is not simply a bright-coloured uniform choice. If visibility is a safety control, choose garments that meet the relevant standard for the role and site conditions. This may include high-visibility vests, waistcoats, jackets, trousers or coveralls with reflective tape.

The level of protection needed depends on vehicle speeds, lighting, weather, proximity to traffic and the nature of the work. A site risk assessment should determine whether hi-vis is required and which class of garment is appropriate. Rail environments may have separate specifications, so do not assume standard high-visibility workwear is acceptable for every contract.

Branding needs care on hi-vis garments. A logo can usually be placed on the chest or rear, but it must not cover reflective bands or reduce the visible fluorescent area beyond what the garment certification allows. Confirm the intended print or embroidery position before production, especially when ordering larger logos or rear prints.

Choose branding that lasts on outdoor workwear

Outdoor uniforms are exposed to rain, dirt, repeated washing and regular wear. Decoration method and placement should reflect this. Embroidery gives a professional, long-lasting finish on polos, fleeces, sweatshirts, softshells and many jackets. Printed logos can be effective for T-shirts, hi-vis vests and garments where a larger rear design is needed.

For most teams, a small embroidered or printed logo on the left chest is enough for everyday identification. Rear branding is useful for roadside work, delivery teams, events and staff who spend much of the day facing away from customers. A chest and rear print package can provide clear visibility from both directions without overcomplicating the uniform.

Use a clean version of the company logo. Fine lines, small text and low-resolution artwork may not reproduce well on fabric. Vector artwork is normally the best starting point, while logo digitising may be needed for embroidery. Keeping the same logo size, colours and position across garments helps maintain a consistent appearance as the uniform range grows.

Buy for the whole year, not one forecast

Ordering outdoor staff clothing only when cold or wet weather arrives can leave teams without the right sizes and garments when they are needed. It is more efficient to plan a core range that covers routine work, then hold spare stock for starters, replacements and seasonal demand.

A practical order often includes lighter garments for summer, warm mid-layers for colder days and waterproofs for wet conditions. Consider how often each item will be washed and whether staff need more than one polo, T-shirt or sweatshirt. Issuing a single item may look cheaper initially but can lead to an untidy, inconsistent uniform between wash cycles.

For small to mid-sized teams, standardising colours and garment styles simplifies reordering. It also makes it easier to add new starters without ending up with several versions of the same uniform. Keep a record of approved garments, logo positions, thread or print colours and staff sizes so future orders can be placed quickly.

Set a clear uniform standard

A uniform policy does not need to be lengthy, but staff should know what is supplied, when it must be worn and how it should be cared for. Explain when hi-vis is mandatory, whether a branded outer layer is required on customer sites and what staff should do if an item becomes damaged or no longer fits.

The most effective outdoor uniform is the one that fits the job, the site and the season. Start with the conditions your team actually works in, choose durable layers that can be worn together, and apply branding in positions that remain visible and practical. That approach keeps purchasing controlled while giving staff clothing they can rely on every working day.
