A cracked chest logo or faded back print can make otherwise serviceable uniforms look untidy long before the garment itself is worn out. Knowing how to wash printed workwear properly helps protect the investment in your team clothing, keeps branding clear and reduces the need for early replacements.
The correct routine depends on the garment fabric, the decoration method and the type of dirt the wearer encounters. A cotton T-shirt with a printed logo needs different handling from a waterproof jacket, embroidered fleece or hi-vis polo shirt. The care label on the individual garment should always take priority, but the guidance below will help most businesses set a clear and workable laundering routine.
Check the care label before every wash
Care labels are not a formality. They set out the maximum wash temperature, drying instructions, ironing limits and whether the garment can be dry cleaned. These instructions account for the fabric, dye and construction of that particular item.
For printed workwear, the decoration is another consideration. Screen print, transfer print and digital print can all be damaged by excessive heat, harsh detergents or repeated high-temperature washing. Embroidery is generally hard-wearing, but the base garment can still shrink, fade or lose its shape if washed incorrectly.
When issuing uniforms, it is useful to give staff a short care note with the garments. This avoids different washing habits across the team and helps preserve a consistent, professional appearance.
How to wash printed workwear step by step
Start by sorting workwear by colour and fabric weight. Wash dark garments together, keep whites separate and avoid overfilling the machine. A crowded drum increases friction between garments, which can gradually wear at printed areas and leave clothes less clean.
Turn printed garments inside out before washing. This is one of the simplest ways to reduce rubbing against the drum, zips, buttons and other items in the load. Fasten zips and hook-and-loop tabs on jackets, trousers and hi-vis garments, as these can catch on fabric or printed logos.
Use a mild detergent and select the lowest temperature that will clean the garment effectively. For most branded polos, T-shirts, hoodies and sweatshirts, a 30°C wash is a sensible default unless the care label states otherwise. Lower temperatures are kinder to print, colour and fabric fibres, while also helping to limit shrinkage.
If workwear has ordinary site dust, light mud or everyday perspiration, pre-treating a small stained area may be enough. Follow the stain remover instructions and test it on a concealed area first where possible. Do not apply strong bleach, solvents or aggressive stain treatments directly onto a printed logo.
Once washed, remove garments from the machine promptly and reshape them if needed. Leaving damp workwear bunched in the drum can cause creasing, odour and colour transfer.
Choose detergent carefully
Standard non-biological detergent is suitable for many printed garments, particularly for routine washing. Biological detergents can also be used where the care label allows, but they may not be ideal for every fabric or wearer, especially where skin sensitivity is an issue.
Avoid chlorine bleach on printed workwear. It can strip colour from garments, weaken fibres and cause prints to fade or discolour. Bleach-based whitening products should also be avoided unless the garment label specifically permits them.
Fabric conditioner is not always necessary. It may leave a coating on some technical fabrics and can reduce the performance of moisture-wicking garments. For printed workwear, use it sparingly if at all. If your uniform range includes performance polos, softshells or safetywear, check the garment care guidance before adding conditioner.
Drying printed uniforms without damaging the logo
Air drying is usually the safest option for printed workwear. Hang garments inside out on a line or drying rack, away from strong direct sunlight where possible. Prolonged sun exposure can fade dark colours and fluorescent hi-vis shades over time.
A tumble dryer may be permitted for some garments, but high heat is a common cause of print cracking, lifting and premature fading. If tumble drying is allowed on the care label, use a low heat setting and remove the garment as soon as it is dry. Do not dry printed workwear on a radiator or directly against intense heat, as this can affect print adhesives and distort some synthetic fabrics.
For businesses managing regular uniform issue, it is worth choosing garments that suit the laundering arrangements available to staff. A premium hoodie may be a good fit for a customer-facing team, but it will need more careful drying than a basic cotton T-shirt. The practical environment matters as much as the initial garment cost.
Ironing and storing branded workwear
Never iron directly over a printed design. High direct heat can melt, mark or flatten the print. Turn the garment inside out and iron the reverse side on the temperature recommended by the care label. If ironing the front cannot be avoided, place a clean pressing cloth between the iron and the garment, keeping the iron away from the printed section.
Embroidery should also be ironed from the reverse where possible. This helps maintain the raised finish of stitched logos and prevents snagging.
Store clean, dry workwear in a cool, dry area. Damp lockers, vans and site cabins can lead to odour, mildew and staining, particularly on heavier fleeces and hoodies. Staff who keep a spare branded layer at work should be encouraged to let it dry fully before packing it away.
Extra care for hi-vis and technical workwear
Hi-vis workwear needs particular attention because its visibility is part of its function. Fluorescent fabric can dull through repeated exposure to dirt, UV light and unsuitable washing. Wash hi-vis items inside out, separately from heavily soiled dark clothing where practical, and do not use bleach.
Reflective tape should not be scrubbed hard, ironed or exposed to high tumble-dryer heat. If a hi-vis garment is certified to a specific safety standard, follow the manufacturer's care instructions and observe any stated maximum number of wash cycles. Damage to fluorescent material or reflective tape may affect whether the garment remains suitable for its intended role.
Technical outerwear, including softshell jackets and waterproof garments, may need specialist detergent to retain their water-repellent or breathable properties. These garments should not be treated like standard cotton workwear simply because they carry the same company logo.
